“Are you Known for your Good Works?” by Sr. Mary David Hydro, OSB

Our chaplain was commenting on the gospel where rich put into the collection from their surplus, while the poor widow gave from her want the little she had. He confessed the collar and robes he wears is a challenging call to him to be authentic. “Too easily”, he noted, “we can let the collar and robes get us respect or advantage.”

St. Benedict would agree. In his 5th century Rule he tells his monks to wear clothing available in the area, that is not expensive, and that fits properly. He also says when they get new clothes to give the old to the poor.

The Scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day wanted to look good. Jesus said that it is the heart and the actions that come from it that tell if we are really good. Yet people judge from appearances too often. We all do it.

We were all measuring ourselves against the words of the homily as it concluded, “The important thing is to be known for our good works not our collar or robes. The Sisters have made a good decision in dressing as they do and being known for their good works and not for how they dress.”
